Palmering
Winding a hackle in open turns along the body, often secured by the rib.
Tie the hackle in at the front of the body. Wind it back towards the bend in evenly spaced open turns and hold the tip there with hackle pliers.
Now wind the rib forward through the hackle, wiggling it so it traps no barbs. The first turn of rib locks the hackle tip; trim the tip afterwards.
Common mistakes
- Trapping barbs under the rib.
- Turns too close, so the hackle hides the body.
